Hotel Skálholt is a stunning destination located on Iceland’s Golden Circle route. It’s the ideal place to stay when exploring the Golden Circle, South Coast, or the Icelandic highlands, offering convenient access to numerous day-trip destinations.

Our hotel features 18 rooms, each equipped with two beds and a private bathroom. Additionally, we offer two cottages with two bedrooms each (four beds) and a private hot tub. For larger groups, we have a five-bedroom villa with two bathrooms (ten beds) and a private hot tub.

Hotel Skálholt is also well-equipped for meetings, seminars, and conferences, which are regularly scheduled. These facilities are available for group rentals, and we host various events in our hall, including stand-up comedy, concerts, weddings, and more.

Hvönn Restaurant in Skálholt is open from 11:30 to 21:00, making it a perfect dining spot on your Golden Circle tour. “Hvönn” means Angelica, a premier herb in Icelandic flora. Our restaurant specializes in traditional Icelandic food with a modern twist, focusing on fermentation methods like lactic acid, kombucha, and kefir. These preservation techniques, used by Icelanders since the first settlements, now create unique and fantastic flavors. The restaurant also features a bar serving both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.

Skálholt is a significant historical site in Iceland since it was our Capital for 750 years and serving as a bishop’s residence since 1056. In the church basement, there’s an exhibition showcasing artifacts and historical fragments. Outside, archaeologists have uncovered building remains adjacent to the church, integral to Icelandic history. We offer both short and long guided tours of the church, exhibition, and historical sites throughout the year, available for groups and individuals.

Hot tubs are available for guests on the patio to relax and enjoy.

The Organist House

The Organist House is the perfect place for big families or groups up to 6 pax. The house has 3 bedrooms, 1 bathrooom, a fully equipped kitchen with a hot tub and large gas grill on the patio.

Skálholt Cottages

Entire Cottage with 2 bedrooms that can sleep up to 4 adults. The cottages offer patio with hut tub and a wonderful garden- and mountain views.

Skálholtsbúðir

Skálholts Búðir are the perfect place for big groups. The entire house offers 11 bedrooms , 10 of them have 2 single beds that can be set up as a double and 1 has 1 single bed.

The house offers 6 bathrooms and 2 showers.

Hvönn Restaurant is an experimental kitchen where we focus on using local Icelandic ingredients. We source our meat, fish, and vegetables locally, and fuse Icelandic and international food traditions using fermentation techniques (kombucha, lactose fermentation, kefir) and drying methods. These practices give our food a unique and special taste and texture.

During the day we offer a bistro menu with delicious Icelandic choices, and in the evenings we have an exciting fine-dining menu. As we emphasize on local and seasonal produce we add courses when we get exciting material to work with.

The chef Bjarki Sól is one of the owner of the hotel. He is a chef that for many years has worked in increasing the quality of food companies in the area and we take advantage of all the experience and relationships on the restaurant.
